π₯οΈ Host your instance
One of the issues that Panoramax addresses is the fact that no single player is capable of supporting the hosting of all the photos of a territory or the world, both technically and financially.
Panoramax's idea is therefore to decentralize the project through multiple instances, which are autonomous servers where photos can be deposited, viewed and accessed through an API. This is a measured but distributed effort. The project can continue to exist even if an instance closes. This is the benefit of decentralization.
To allow photos to be viewed globally, these instances are federated on the π€ federated catalog.
You can contribute to Panoramax by hosting your own instance.
To host your own instance, you need to :
- Install a Panoramax backend
- Install a Panoramax website
Public instance
If you want to host a public Panoramax instance, you can open an issue on the π€ federated catalog, so your pictures can be available to all.
Info
Having a public instance do not mean you have to open your instance to everyone, you can restrict the account creation to whoever you want, or restrict the pictures to a specific geographic area.
You administer your instance as you wish.
Non public pictures on public instance
You can have non public pictures on a public instance by restricting the visibility of the pictures.
Private instance
You can also install your own private instance if you do not want or cannot share the pictures, you only have to not add it to the π€ federated catalog.
If your instance contains very sensitive data, you might want to also consider hosting it on a closed network.
